Kyosuke (or Kyousuke) has a passion for filming, and is constantly carrying a digital video recorder with him. One Christmas night, he sees Kei Shindou running down the street and tried to get a shot of her, but a truck passed by, so he could not get a clean shot. From there on, he becomes stricken wanting to capture Kei with his camera. After immersing himself in the thoughts of the mystery girl that Christmas night. He does not realize that it was Kei during that certain encounter. Almost obsessed with his subject, Kyousuke ends up quitting the film club. Then his girlfriend, Emi, suggests that they break up -- which Kyosuke agrees. He eventually falls in love with Kei.

Renji's mother. Sumire is also a bit naive and acts like a young maiden. She looks younger than she really is.

Chihiro is the younger twin sister of Kei Shindo from Ef: The First Tale. She is soft-spoken, meek and quiet unlike the energetic Kei. She wears an eyepatch because she was involved in a car accident when she was young. From her accident, Chihiro suffers from a severe case of anterograde amnesia and constantly writes on her diary to help her remember. Chihiro meets Renji in an abandoned station and both of them befriend each other despite that both of them are mutually shy. Her dream is to write a fantasy novel, and Renji collaborates with her to fulfill her dream. Eventually, they fall in love with each other.

Mizuki goes to an affiliated school and admires Kei greatly as someone who is older than her. In fact, Mizuki is also on Kei's girl's basketball team at school. She is playful and greatly enjoys reading shoujo manga. She has a straightforward attitude and likes to be frank towards others, especially to Kei.


She's the main heroine of ~ef: Tale of Melodies. She is fascinated by music and musicians alike, especially Shuichi.

Yuu is the main character of ef: Tale of Melodies, part of which is dedicated to his past and his relationship with the previously unknown woman. In Tale of Memories, Yuu shares Chihiro's past and the story of her eyepatch to Renji. He cares about Chihiro and he doesn't want her to get hurt from a false friendship.


Yuu enjoys drawing, but he doesn't admit this fact. He is a quiet and thoughtful person during his later life, often not revealing the whole truth or deliberately being vague when questioned.

Shuuichi is Renji's neighbor and a good friend of Yuu Himura. He is a natural womanizer and is especially fond of Renji's mom, Sumire, even though she's already married. Shuuichi is a famous violinist and Hiro is one of Shuuichi's fans. In the past, he went to the same school as Yuu Himura, Hirono Nagi (Hiro's older sister), and Amamiya Yuuko; all of whom he considered to be his friends. Although Kuze was planning on moving to another country by the time he met Yuuko.

Renji Asou is the second male protagonist of ef: Tale of Memories. He is half German and half Japanese. Renji hangs out on an abandoned train station whenever he needs to rest before coming home. At the abandoned train station, Renji sees a girl seated alone and introduced himself. The girl, Chihiro Shindou, was wearing an eyepatch over her left eye. Chihiro is actually Kei's younger twin sister.


Despite both of them being mutually shy, Renji comes back to see her at the station every day after school and quickly becomes friends with her. Renji later learns that Chihiro has a severe case of anterograde amnesia where she cannot remember anything in the past thirteen hours. She was involved in an accident and Chihiro can clearly recall the events before the accident as well. But anywhere further than the accident, Renji discovers that Chihiro has to write down her life on her diary in order to know what has recently happened.

When Renji befriends Chihiro, he finds out that Chihiro's dream is to write a fantasy novel, but due to her condition she has never been able to get far. Renji is delighted to hear that Chihiro wants to be a novelist, because Renji loves to read novels. He decides to collaborates with her to see if he can finally make her dream come true. Through the process of writing the novel, Renji and Chihiro become very close and eventually fall in love with each other. Renji soon discovers that the Chihiro's novel is an allegory for Chihiro's life and how she sees the world around her due to the state of her limited memory.

Miyako is the main heroine of ef: Tales of Memories. She met Hiro one night, when she stole his bike on Christmas night; ironically, she stole Hiro's bike while trying to catch a purse thief. But Miyako ended up destroying Hiro's bike. Miyako hung out with him for the rest of the night because they had so much free time.


Afterwards, they meet again at school. Like Hiro, Miyako does not attend classes much because she thinks every class is boring. Unlike, Hiro, Miyako has an energetic personality -- perhaps the same as Kei's energetic demeanor. But Miyako enjoys doing weird and unorthodox things. While Miyako and Hiro spend their time together, Miyako eventually starts to become attracted to him.

Kei is the conflicting main heroine of ef: Tales of Memories. She is Hiro's childhood friend. Kei is one year younger than Hiro and calls him oniichan, or older brother. Both of them attend the same school.

Kei is also Hiro's neighbour. She helps Hiro with various house chores and she often goes to Hiro's house just to wake him up. Kei knows that Hiro is a mangaka and keeps it a secret. She wakes Hiro up if he had spent the previous night working on his manga.


Kei's strong point is playing sports. She is very athletic and is the star player of the girl's basketball team of her school. Kei is ultimately attracted to Hiro ever since childhood. Kei becomes very jealous when she finds out how much time he is spending with Miyako Miyamura. She thinks that Hiro is giving Miyako unnecessary attention; Kei thinks Miyako is a nuisance and a complete stranger that barged into their lives.
