Hiro Hirono one of the male protagonists in 'ef - a tales of memories'. He is a high school student who usually skips class because of work. He is a Mangaka, a manga artist, and Hiro has his specialty on Shoujo mangas. He works as a mangaka under his pen name, Nagi Shindo. Her older sister, Nagi Hirono, gave her this pen name. Moreover, Nagi Shindo, is also a homophonic spelling of the family name from his childhood friend Kei Shindo.


His family and his class doesn't know that he's a manga artist and that he's already a professional in the field. Kei Shindo, his childhood friend, knows that Hiro is a manga artist and keeps it as a secret. Despite the fact that she knows, Kei insists that Hiro should attend class more often and that his primary occupation is to be a student. Although, Hiro believes that his work is a bit more important than school. Overall, in the anime, even though that he's able to support himself, money is still stiff and Hiro barely eats decent food at home.

During the course of the series, Hiro searches for the missing color of his life.
