Renji Asou is the second male protagonist of ef: Tale of Memories. He is half German and half Japanese. Renji hangs out on an abandoned train station whenever he needs to rest before coming home. At the abandoned train station, Renji sees a girl seated alone and introduced himself. The girl, Chihiro Shindou, was wearing an eyepatch over her left eye. Chihiro is actually Kei's younger twin sister.
Despite both of them being mutually shy, Renji comes back to see her at the station every day after school and quickly becomes friends with her. Renji later learns that Chihiro has a severe case of anterograde amnesia where she cannot remember anything in the past thirteen hours. She was involved in an accident and Chihiro can clearly recall the events before the accident as well. But anywhere further than the accident, Renji discovers that Chihiro has to write down her life on her diary in order to know what has recently happened.
When Renji befriends Chihiro, he finds out that Chihiro's dream is to write a fantasy novel, but due to her condition she has never been able to get far. Renji is delighted to hear that Chihiro wants to be a novelist, because Renji loves to read novels. He decides to collaborates with her to see if he can finally make her dream come true. Through the process of writing the novel, Renji and Chihiro become very close and eventually fall in love with each other. Renji soon discovers that the Chihiro's novel is an allegory for Chihiro's life and how she sees the world around her due to the state of her limited memory.
